‘Is it the season to be dandy? Indeed, it’s that time of year again on the men’s fashion calendar, when fixing up and looking sharp becomes somewhat of a priority. Fear not, as smash-hit Mad Men has taught us, the suit is our saviour. Working its way back into the modern wardrobe, the suit is the perfect way of maintaining a happy medium between office wear to occasion wear. Take a look at the ways you can wear it:
Classic
The classic black suit; effortless and smart, is perfect for dinner or dancing. Teamed with a skinny black tie and a crisp button-down shirt, it really doesn’t get any better. Finish off with cufflinks or add a festive flourish with a flash of coloured pocket square.
Contemporary
For something a touch more fashion forward, consider a grey or blue suit. Less formal, but when accessorised with an on-trend purple tie or patterned cravat, gives a real sartorial edge to a formal look. Mixing and matching colours and patterns is key, so donning pair of brown brogues is perfect for bringing your fashion credentials up a notch.
Traditional
There’s no greater way of making an entrance than by donning a tuxedo. Simple, yet incredibly effective, this polished look is in the big leagues of formalwear and has remained a classic throughout men’s fashion history. A silk bow tie and immaculate pair of polished Oxfords is all you really need to complete the look.
Now that the holiday season is upon us, it’s time to dust off that old, trusty suit, ready for a stint on the party circuit. The dilemma with a suit however, is maintaining the balance between a smart, sophisticated look and something a little more festive without falling into the “fancy dress” category.
It’s true that, as an investment piece for most, men could face this issue for at least 4 or 5 years, but that doesn’t have to be the case.
The suit is no longer just for the working man, it’s for the fashionable one, with retailers offering everything from slim-legged trousers and printed linings to bib-fronted Shirts and shining brogues. The transition of tailoring into the modern man’s wardrobe is the beginning of a new era of men’s fashion, where looking smart and sophisticated can happen every day.
